The drink that Heraclitus is discussing was made out of ground barley, grated cheese, wine, and sometimes honey (Robinson 162).  The drink constantly had to be stirred or else the ingredients would not stay mixed.

Almost all editors add the word μὴ (not) to make sense of this fragment.  The manuscripts do not have this negative particle, but it does not make sense otherwise.


For no reason that I can discover, Diels includes another fragment of doubtful authenticity with this one and calls it 125a.
